If you've read Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver you know that it takes place in the rural backwoods of Virginia--specifically Lee County. Her portrayal of this Appalachian community is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. When trying to find a good cocktail inspired by the hillbilly residents of Lee County I immediately looked for something that would utilize Mountain Dew and other ingredients easily found at a convenience store (no Green Chartreuse or Luxardo cherries!). The Lee County Cooler was the result. Recipe below:
Ingredients:
2 ounces vodka
1 ounce grapefruit juice
4 ounces Mountain Dew
1 maraschino cherry
Combine all ingredients over ice and give it a stir.
